Ruessi Sanctuary - The Ata

The Ata, or Sanctuary, is a compond of several acres consisting of spirit houses, lodging for about fifty disciples, and an area for their work elephants. The Head Ruessi remains secluded on site and makes public appearances only when officiating the lunar holidays or receiving devotees from outlying villages. Lay Tong Ku is a Karen village inhabited by followers of the animist religion of the Karen Ruessi who settled near the Sanctuary of their spiritual leader hundreds of years ago.
